Tortoise brooches (also called oval brooches or turtle brooches) are one of the most typical kind of Viking female jewelry. They usually were worn in pairs on women breast and their purpose is to hold up the loops of Hangerock (apron dress). Archaeological excavations show that chains or strands of glass, ceramic or silver beads were hanging between two brooches. Accessories like knives, scissors, keys, needle cases attached to ring and chain were also hanging on one of the brooches.
